To this day there is limited information about the careers of PhD prepared nurses. It is unknown where PhD prepared nurses find their careers, what their experiences with career development are, how well they are prepared for postdoctoral roles, how they are supported in developing their leadership competences and how they experience their working environment. Outcomes of this study can contribute to optimization of strategic planning for future doctoral education, development of careers pathways and opportunities for career advancement and policies to improve the working conditions of PhD prepared nurses and thereby to advance the nursing (science) discipline and health care across countries. This study of part of a PhD dissertation called “ Future Nurse Leaders – Advancing careers of doctorally prepared nurses”. This dissertation aims to describe the career development of PhD prepared nurses and to evaluate leadership and mentoring programmes for career development of PhD prepared nurses.

Participation in this study

You are eligible to participate in this study if you have a PhD degree in the field of Nursing / Nursing Science. Data will be collected through an one-time online survey. The deadline for participation in this study is 31-03-2022. The symposium will bring together the Nurse-Lead fellows and chairs as well as nursing scientists from various European countries to discuss the topic “Competent Leadership in Nursing Science” and proceeds of the Nurse-Lead project. Professor Hester C. Klopper PhD, MBA, HonsD, FANSA, FAAN, ASSAf Deputy Vice Chancellor Stellenbosch University South Africa and former president van Sigma Theta Tau International will discuss “Global Leadership in Nursing”. Also, Professor Annie Topping, RN, PhD, FHEA, from the University of Birmingham will share her knowledge on “Clinical – Academic positions”. There will be parallel interactive sessions and group discussion with Nurse-Lead fellows and nurse scientists presenting on the conference themes: leadership and professional development, mentoring experiences, building bridges between research and clinical practice and joint position for nurse scientists. Invitation Nurse-Lead Symposium

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic we had to reschedule our Nurse-Lead symposium to 26 and 27 October. In the last months we have monitored the course of the pandemic as well as the regulations in the involved countries. Fortunately, the situation has become more stable in our countries. Although, some countries were more affected by COVID-19 then others, all of our countries had to deal with restrictions in the past months. One of the restrictions in most countries is that organizing large international scientific meetings is not allowed.
For us, the Nurse-Lead consortium, the safety of our visitors is most important. After many thorough discussions within the Nurse-Lead consortium, we concluded that there will be to much risk in travelling across Europe. However, we find it highly important to have a celebration event to conclude the project. Therefore, the Nurse-Lead consortium decided to organize an online symposium on 26 and 27 October. Details on the online symposium will be presented on this webpage soon.

As the outbreak of COVID-19 has been developing worldwide, the Nurse-Lead consortium has been closely tracking its impact. We have been monitoring recommendations from the World Health Organization (WHO) and local Disease Control and Prevention Centers in the involved countries, along with the numerous travel restrictions issued by universities and health care organizations. After carefully weighing the emerging facts, the Nurse-Lead consortium has made the difficult, but necessary decision to postpone the Nurse-Lead symposium. Therefore, the Nurse-Lead symposium will now be held at 26 and 27 October 2020 in Lisbon.

At this moment it is unsure how the Covid-19 pandemic  will develop and what the recommendations from the World Health Organization (WHO) and local Disease Control and Prevention Centers will be. Therefore, the Nurse-Lead consortium will monitor the course of the pandemic closely as well as its potential impact on our Nurse-Lead symposium in October. More information on the symposium will be provided soon.

Thank you for your understanding as we were considering the rapidly changing circumstances as well as the safety and wellbeing of our meeting attendees.

The Nurse-Lead consortium

Postdoctoral nurses and doctoral nursing students have an important role in generating and implementing new knowledge and to connect the worlds of research, clinical practice and teaching. Improved leadership competences are associated with improved patient, work and organization related outcomes. The Nurse-Lead program is the first leadership program that focuses on leadership and professional development of Postdoctoral nurses and Doctoral nursing students working in research in Europe. The Nurse-Lead fellows taking part in the program have worked diligently on their leadership competencies and professional development by following the online leadership modules and the individual mentoring trajectories.

Since the Nurse-Lead project is coming to an end, we would like to invite you to attend the Nurse-Lead symposium to learn more about competent leadership in nursing science and the proceeds of this project.

The central theme of the symposium is Leadership in Nursing Science. There will be various plenary sessions with keynote speakers who will give lectures on relevant themes and parallel interactive sessions with fellows and nurse scientists presenting on the conference themes: leadership and professional development, mentoring experiences and building bridges between research and clinical practice. On the 23^rd we will have a dinner with the group with a celebration ceremony.

On 12 and 13 September 2019 the first Nurse-Lead meeting was held. Over thirty Nurse-Lead fellows and consortium members from Germany, Portugal, Lithuania, Iceland, Finland and the Netherlands visited the Academic Building in Utrecht. The programme was filled with various speakers and workshops on leadership, professional development and mentoring. The meeting was a great success – according to the fellows and participants. It was a real asset to meet each other in person and work on leadership and professional development together. The next Nurse-Lead meeting will be in the spring of 2020.

On 12 and 13 September 2019 will we have our first Nurse-Lead face-to-face meeting. Postdoctoral nurses, doctoral nursing students and members of the Nurse-Lead consortium from Finland, Germany, Iceland, Lithuania, Portugal and the Netherlands will meet in Utrecht. The meetings is organized to bring all the Nurse-Lead fellows and consortium members together to get to know each other face-to-face, share experiences with building a career in academic nursing and strengthen their professional development and leadership competencies. The postdoctoral nurses and doctoral nursing students will engage in various activities and have the opportunity to meet various leadership experts.

Healthcare – and nursing – face huge challenges worldwide because of ageing populations, increasing prevalence of chronic illness and greater emphasis on self-care. Also, today’s healthcare demand that healthcare professionals provide evidence-based, effective and cost-effective care to patients. Nursing care must adapt to meet these challenges. Therefore the interest in leadership in nursing has been growing through the past years. There is growing evidence for leadership practices positively impacting outcomes in various healthcare settings, including nursing. Strong leadership practices have a positive impact on patients, professionals and healthcare outcomes.

To strengthen the leadership practices of nurses globally, the Nurse-Lead consortium developed an interactive online course called “Leadership in Nursing” for (future) nurses working in all areas of clinical care and bachelor nursing students.

About the course

The course will introduce (personal) leadership and is expected to strengthen your leadership practices and professional development. The course consists of eight learning units and concerns the following topics:

• Leadership definitions, theories and models
• Leadership skills and competences
• The Exemplary Leadership model of Kouzes and Posner
• Clinical leadership
• Leading evidence-based practice
• Global trends and challenges in nursing

Besides, the course focusses on professional development by self-reflection, self-assessments and shadowing of a nurse leader. The course is an individual course consisting out of self-study. Therefore, you can work on the course at your own pace. In this course fellows from various European countries will participate. You will be able to share experiences and knowledge with nurses from Germany, Portugal, Iceland, Finland, Lithuania and the Netherlands.

Today a group of approximately 50 postdoctoral nurses and doctoral nursing students will start with the “Nursing Leadership Educational Program for Doctoral and Postdoctoral Nurses” or Nurse-Lead programme. This is a 1 ½ year program in which doctoral nursing students and post-doctoral nurses strengthen their leadership skills, research skills, professional development and establish transnational networks. This program will be the first project in Europe where academies, educators and students from different countries come together and collaborate when developing their leadership, professional and research skills. At the end of this program the fellows will have the knowledge and skills to successfully conduct interdisciplinary research and establish transnational networks.

In the program learning methods will be used to improve your leadership and research competencies. Fellows will learn individually by reading the literature and watching web lectures. Group assignments and discussion forums will be used to share experiences and knowledge. Besides, during the program a personal mentoring trajectory will be offered to support and monitor the leadership and professional development. A mentor is an experiences professional in the fellows’ area of interest and leadership. The Nurse-Lead consortium also offers regular “meet the expert” sessions in which an experiences nurse scientist shares their experiences on professional development and leadership.

The program for postdoctoral nurses

The program for postdoctoral nurses focusses on leadership development, research development and professional development in nursing science. In this program fellows focus on developing and strengthening their research program as well as their strategic and global leadership practices.
